One shielded document plus the slot it has to return to.
freeBefore = how many FREE pieces preceded it in the stream at the moment it left the fold. That is the only positional fact that survives: a lock partitions the stream, so the locked document is no longer addressable by an absolute index once later steps change the free remainder's cardinality.
